What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is a comprehensive body of research that consists of decades of research and scientific knowledge that spans many languages. It entails the research of many experts from relevant disciplines such as literacy, education, special education, psychology, neurology, and more.

The Science of Reading is supported by research that provides us with the information we need to understand how the brain learns to read. It helps us to gain a deeper understanding of the different parts of the brain that are responsible for reading development. Using this research, we can identify and implement evidence-based best practices when it comes to literacy instruction.

It is also important to note that in 2000, the National Reading Panel defined the five pillars of reading to be phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
