Word mapping is connecting the phoneme to the grapheme is a physical way in which to represent the relationship between the phonemes and graphemes. Theses maps allow the student to connect the graphemes (letters) to the phonemes (sounds). How to Use This Resource:

Print, laminate, and cut the segmentation maps.

Print, laminate and cut picture cards. Note: Picture cards are grouped by phonics skill. It is a good idea to cut them and place them in a container or baggie so they don't get mixed up.

Place the mats, picture cards, dry erase marker, eraser and chips in a bin. Ask students to place a picture on the square provided, move chips up to represent each sound and then write the corresponding graphemes below with an expo marker. Repeat the process.
