Roll, Segment, Cover (and Write)

$12.00

Included:

12 Color Game Boards

- CVC

-Blends

-Digraphs

-CVCe

-Vowel Teams

Step 1: PREPARE materials: dice, gameboards, recording sheets, chips. Prep: Print and laminate game boards

Step 2: DISTRIBUTE Give each student a gameboard, dice, recording sheet and chips.

Step 3: EXPLAIN Students have two options for this game.

Option 1: Ask students to roll the dice and choose a picture from that row. Tell students to segment and blend that picture orally. If they do so correctly, they may cover that image. Students take turns going through these steps. The first student to get four in a row wins the game.

Option 2: Play the game as it states above, but have students encode (write) the words as they go or at the end of the game.

Phonemic Awareness is a crucial component of literacy development. Students need multiple opportunities to practice! Why not make it fun and engaging for them?

Fun Fact: The NRP recently released data stating that the MOST important components (for reading development) phonemic awareness are blending and segmenting. Research shows that phonemic awareness is even more powerful when it is accompanied by letter sounds. This is why I have provided two options for this activity.
